Origin of the name Fraisans |
|
Fraisans
is not known by any document prior to the beginning of the 12th century.
Its creation is probably due to the construction of the Château-fort, erected during
the feudal period by the sovereigns of Burgundy to defend the Doubs river.
This castle could be at the origin of the etymology of Fraisans, because in some works,
the origin would be a proper name: Frize. On the other hand, if we refer to
the history of Frasne or Franois, we learn that these names are very common in Franche-Comté
and would come from Fraxinus (ash tree). These communes are said to have taken
their names from the forest species that grew most abundantly on their territory.

Fraisans:
its Forges and the Eiffel tower. |
|
|
The
masterpiece of the 1889 exhibition is the Eiffel Tower. It was a friend, Armand Pathé,
who provided Gustave Eiffel with favourable information on the quality of the iron from Fraisans,
which determined the engineer to make a major commission for its construction.
(The Eiffel Tower is not made of steel, but of puddled iron, which is much less prone to corrosion).
It was by 11 barges that the iron from Fraisans, delivered in October or November 1887,
was transported to Dole, then Dijon and Paris. The journey lasted 10 days. In the end,
the Fraisans iron, about 2200 tons, or more than 30% of the total weight of the structure,
was unloaded on the bridge of Iena. It was mainly used for the construction of the first floor,
except for the large arches, of which the iron, 2000 tons, came from Creusot.
